1 One half cup Sugar
2 One half cup Water
1 cup Lime juice
1 qt Dark rum

This is not a liqueur, but it's a delicious drink which I found in an
American Heritage cookbook it's supposed to have been drunk in 18th C.
America. I imagine that the name "shrub" may have come from the
Arabic/Urdu "sharaab", which means liquor (the British in Calcutta around
the same time drank "Loll Shrub"). It keeps indefinitely without
refrigeration, and it's very light, smooth and cool.
Dissolve the sugar in water, cool, add the remaining ingredients. Strain,
bottle, and let stand for at least a week before drinking.
