Recipe - Lard Cookies

1 cup Lard
9/16 cup Sugar
1 cup Buttermilk
9/16 teaspoon Baking soda
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Nutmeg
1 Heaping teaspoon baking
powder
3 cup Flour (or enough flour to
make a soft dough which
will
hold together for
rolling)
Melt lard; then cool until lukewarm. Sift all dry ingredients together. Add
lard to dry ingredients. Add buttermilk. Mix well. Roll dough to One half inch
thickness on floured board. Cut large round cookies. Cook until brown,
about 12 minutes.

"This recipe has been handed down three generations. Grandma Totten said
that the "new" shortenings just didn't work as well as lard besides
lard's cheaper"
